BOC Icon Recycle +

Haverford Township is dedicated to reducing waste, reusing materials, and recycling what cannot be used. It is through these actions that we, as a community, can better support our environment – reducing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

Recycling is an easy and valuable action. Recycling helps to reduce the need for more raw materials, conserves valuable natural resources, saves energy, and reduces the amount of waste being sent to incinerators and landfills – which contributes to pollution and increases in greenhouse gas emissions.

BOC Icon Recycling Question & Answer

  • What cleaning is required for kitchen plastic or glass containers?
  • Discard residual liquid or food, rinse if necessary, and allow to dry. Remember the importance of conserving water - for some items that are too difficult to remove all the residue (e.g., peanut butter jars), it would be better to discard in the trash or try soaking overnight than to use excess water to clean.

  • Can labels be left on glass jars and plastic bottles/containers?
  • Paper labels can be left on glass jars and plastic bottles/containers. However, plastic bottles/containers may have a plastic label that must be removed before recycling. Read the back of the bottle/container for recycling information.

  • Can tabs be left on aluminum cans?

  • Yes. Tabs can be left on as long as they are attached to the can.

  • Can you recycle lids if you screw them on?

  • Yes. Plastic bottle caps can be left securely screwed on. No. Metal lids from glass containers are not recyclable, even if screwed on the container.

  • Can you recycle tabs or lids loosely in your recycling bin (e.g., metal lids from glass jars, lids from plastic bottles or jars, tabs from aluminum cans, prescription bottle/container lids)?
  • No. Any item smaller than a credit card (like lids) are too small by themselves and can get stuck in the sorting machine, causing delays and the need for repairs. Please don’t place loose lids or tabs in the recycling!

  • Can you stack plastic containers?
  • Yes. You can stack plastic containers if they have the SAME plastic recycling number.

  • Why are toothpaste tubes and bottles not recyclable curbside?
  • Toothpaste tubes and bottles are not recyclable curbside because it is not possible to remove all the remaining toothpaste from inside.

  • Why are plastic bags not recyclable curbside?
  • Plastic bags can get caught in the sorting machines at recycling facilities, causing delays and damage to equipment.

  • Why are mixed-material items not recyclable curbside?
  • When two or more materials are combined, they cannot be recycled as-is in single stream, even if one or both are recyclable individually.

  • Does the Township provide refuse and recycling containers? How do you request one?
  • Residents must provide their own refuse container, purchased through any retailer. Recycling cans are available at the Public Works office in the Township Building for free if you moved into the Township within 6 months, or for all residents for just $35. Once ordered and paid for, your new can will be delivered to your residence for your convenience. Recycling stickers to place on any can are also available at the Township Building for no cost!

  • Is it OK to place recyclables in a plastic bag for collection inside the blue recycling can?
  • No. Recyclables in single stream recycling need to be loose and directly placed in a can. Bundled recyclables can’t be sorted properly at the facility, so all of it ends up in a landfill. Recycling in plastic bags, paper bags, or cardboard boxes will result in your recycling being placed in the trash.

  • What if you have too much recycling?
  • Excess recycling can be dropped off at Haverford Township Community Recycling Center. The Haverford Township Community Recycling Center is located on Hilltop Road, near the intersection of Old West Chester Pike. There, you'll find two dumpsters clearly marked; one dumpster marked for both paper and cardboard; and one dumpster for glass, cans and plastics. If the dumpsters are full, please do not leave your materials at the site. Please do not leave any other materials or debris at this location.

  • Why recycle?
  • Recycling helps our environment by keeping items out of the landfills and incinerators, saves more resources for future generations, decreases air and water pollution from abstracting and refining natural resources, and requires less energy, which produces less carbon dioxide - the leading cause of manmade climate change.
  • BOC Icon Recycling beyond the blue bin...

Recycling doesn’t have to end at the blue bin. There are a number of ways to recycle items that are not accepted curbside.

    BOC Icon E-Waste Bins

The Township has partnered with PAR-Recycle Works, a local not-for-profit, which hires formerly incarcerated individuals to recycle used electronics. Their mission is twofold: working to restore lives by providing job training and transitional paid employment in a supportive environment, while also protecting the planet and assuring that e-waste is dismantled and properly recycled. PAR-Recycle Works is a first-level processing center for used electronics. Their workers deconstruct the items received and separate them into their major components. When necessary, they erase all data from hard drives before selling components to environmentally-responsible downstream processors. The Township hosts two Large E-Waste Events throughout the year. During these events, PAR-Recycle Works collects computer towers, monitors, keyboards, laptops, printers, cable boxes, game consoles, phones, cell phones, fax machines, scanners, VCR’s, DVD players, stereos, speakers, toasters, blenders, vacuums, small appliances, rechargeable batteries (NiMH, lithium ion, laptop, and cell phone batteries ONLY), wires, cables, string lights, TV’s (plasma, flat screen, and CRT), dehumidifiers, humidifiers, air conditioners, and microwaves. The Township also has three small e-waste collection bins available year-round, two in the Township Building lower parking lot, and one in the CREC parking lot. These bins collect small e-waste items like tablets, cell phones, telephones, gaming systems, DVD players, VCR’s, and chargers. Large items like TV’s, microwaves, and air conditioners will not fit into the slot. Please DO NOT try to force anything into the slot that does not fit easily. Note: If you have any functional electronics, consider donating them to a local collection site.

    BOC Icon TerraCycle

The Township houses two TerraCycle collection bins outside the front doors of the Township Building located at 1014 Darby Rd. These collection bins are for oral care and personal care products.
    Accepted oral care items:

  • Toothbrushes

  • BOC Icon Bread Bag Tag Collection

The Township is now collecting bread bag tags! These tags are located on bread, muffin, fruit, hamburger bun, hot dog bun, and vegetable bags, among others. Haverford will be sending the collected bread tags to Danielle Cares for Chairs, a non-profit that brings the plastic tags to be recycled and uses the proceeds from the recycler to purchase mobility products like wheelchairs for people in need. Start collecting today and plan to bring your bread tags to the Township! The blue collection tube will be located just outside the front doors of the Township Building, near the personal care and oral care collection bins.

Danielle Cares for Chairs is committed to taking products that would normally be thrown away, recycling or redesigning them, and ultimately using them to improve our standard of living. We are excited to support this mission here in Haverford!
